DATE(1) General Commands Manual DATE(1) NAME date -- print the date and time SYNOPSIS date [-u] [+%s] DESCRIPTION date prints the time now, as the kernel reads it from the machine's real-time clock, in the form Sun Sep 27 05:34:12 UTC 2026 The time is always UTC and always whole seconds: ABSD declares the real-time clock to hold UTC, has no time zones, and the clock has no finer resolution. -u is accepted and changes nothing. +%s prints the seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC instead. Nothing on ABSD sets or corrects the clock. Under QEMU it starts from the host's UTC time (`-rtc base=utc'), the default. A physical machine's clock may hold local time, or drift; date cannot tell. The same clock stamps the lines of the logs under /var/log (afterboot(8)). Files carry no times at all; see filesystem(7). EXIT STATUS 0 on success, 1 when the kernel refuses a reading (the clock gave no stable, valid value: no time is made up), 2 for any other argument. Setting the clock and other formats are not supported. SEE ALSO uptime(1), filesystem(7) ABSD September 27, 2026 DATE(1)
